History In 1993, Kauai native Sherri Maier moved to Kalispell, Montana and started a small hula school. After 8 years Sherri and her family moved out of state and Macy Massey, who grew up on Oahu, took on the responsibility of running our school. Under Macy, in 2003, our hula school was accepted by Kumu Blaine as a part of his Halau. In 2005, Macy returned to her home in Oahu, where she dances with Halau Ka Waikahe Lani Malie. Both Sheri and Macy brought their love of hula and shared their culture with us. Our Halau has continued under the leadership of Mea Kako`o Sharon Hammerquist.
We now have 25 Halau members and classes for all ages. We meet once weekly for class during the nine month school year, sometimes braving blizzards and icy roads to get to hula class. Our toes get freezing cold on the dance studio floor! During summer vacation our Halau gets together several times a month to dance at a local park . We share hula by dancing at all kinds of community events: at churches, nursing homes, the county fair, art fairs and schools. Once a month a few of us meet to eat, play ukulele , sing and dance in a member's home.
Kumu Juni Kalahikiola Romuar and Alika`i from Sacramento and Antioch Halaus visit us several times a year to teach us dances, protocol and crafts.
